SCRs and TRIACs

SCRs

A silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) is a normal rectifier controlled by a gate signal. It is a 3 termal, 4-layered device. When the voltage on the gate exceeds the threshold voltage the device turns on and conducts current even if the gate voltage is removed as long as the current through the device exceeds the holding current. When the current through the device falls below the holding current, the device turns off.

SCRs are available with currents up to 200 amps and voltages up to 1000 volts in a variety of packages.

SCRs are used to control power in DC circuits. Typical applications are DC power switching, phase control circuits, inverters, battery chargers, welders, and solid state relays.

These units can be custom designed to meet your special requirements.

TRIACs

A TRIAC is basically two SCRs connected in parallel in opposing polarities with both gates tied together. TRIACs are used to control power in an AC circuit.

It is a bidirectional electronic switch, which will conduct current in either direction when it is triggered with either polarity voltage on its gate. The device will continue to conduct until the current drops below the threshold voltage.

This allows the control of large amounts of power with small amounts of gate power and makes them ideal in AC switching circuits and phase control applications. TRIACs are available in current ratings up to 200 amps and voltages up to 1000 volts in a variety of packages. These units can be custom designed to satisfy your special requirements.

Edal's designs provide for rugged, stable and reliable performance, even in severe environments.
